La Montana fragrances always evoke Spain, and this particular scent is the most surprising of the trio, suggesting a deep familiarity with Spain across different seasons is needed to fully appreciate its composition. The initial notes are balsamic and aromatic, led by fir, fennel, and pine needle, while the floral heart emerges in the dry down.
The fennel imparts a delightful hint of aniseed to the scent. As the geranium and rock rose notes surface, the fragrance becomes softer, shedding the initial sharpness. It leaves a familiar sweet trail that invites repeated sniffs – I’ve exceeded my usual sniff limit for this fragrance! After a while, my sense of smell fatigues, necessitating a break before revisiting my wrist. Nonetheless, the essence of the fragrance lingers – the choice of name, First Light, is apt, capturing the essence of an early summer morning walk with the promise of heat and the surroundings still fresh and dewy. The smaller 10ml bottle is priced at £22, recommended as a starting point before considering the larger bottle at £65 if the scent resonates with you.
