I’m a Fashion Editor—Here’s Everything That’s in My Capsule Wardrobe

My name is Madeline, and I work as The Everygirl’s Fashion Editor. I’ve been responsible for the fashion section since 2021, and my job takes up a lot of my time. I love writing and talking about fashion, and it’s a dream job for me. As the fashion editor, I try out a lot of clothes from different brands to make sure we’re featuring the best options. Simply put, I try a lot of clothes.

Another one of my responsibilities as the fashion editor is to create and curate capsule wardrobes. Surprisingly, I’ve never shared my personal capsule wardrobe before. I’ve been developing it over the years, and if something stays in my wardrobe, it’s because it’s really, really good.

I enjoy incorporating trends into my wardrobe, but I also have a collection of basic pieces that I rely on for everyday outfits. These core items are the best of the best; they are the pieces I own, have tested, and wear frequently in my daily life. So, without further ado, I’m sharing the breakdown of my personal capsule wardrobe.

For Working from a Coffee Shop

Sunglasses | Button-up | Denim shorts | Ballet flats

On days when I want to get ready but keep it casual, this is almost always my go-to outfit. This button-up is one of my all-time favorite pieces; it’s thick, so it doesn’t wrinkle throughout the day. I invested in a nice button-up, and I don’t have to keep replacing them constantly.

These denim shorts are what I’d consider perfect. They are longer and looser, but they don’t stretch throughout the day. I’ve had them for two years, and I still reach for them eagerly every summer. The Celine Triomphe sunglasses were a major splurge, but I don’t regret it at all—they’re a classic, oversized pair that goes well with any outfit. I wear them daily. Paired with my favorite ballet flats (which I own in two colors), it’s a casual, repeatable look that’s perfect for any day.

For Dinner on a Patio

Puff earrings | Maxi dress | Beaded bag | Heeled sandals

If you’ve been following along, you know that I adore the Staud Beaded Tommy bags. I love playing with accessories, and this bag is incredibly fun. I have one for the winter months and one for the summer. Although the latter is no longer available, I love the current fruit salad version even more. It elevates this simple maxi dress and heeled sandal combination—perfect for a night out on a patio with a refreshing glass of rosé. I’m a big fan of Jenny Bird jewelry, and these puff earrings are one of my favorite pieces. They add more flair to my outfit than my hoops, and I’ve been wearing them since the day I got them.

For Working from Home

Sweatshirt | Workout dress | Sneakers

I work from home three days a week but still like to dress up to some extent to boost my productivity. In the summer, I often reach for this workout dress. I have it in three colors, and I love that it makes me feel put-together while being comfortable. It seamlessly takes me from work to running errands or walking my dog. I’m a dedicated sneaker fan, and these New Balances are my top picks for the year. After waiting for my size to come back in stock, I now own them in two colors and wear them repeatedly. I wear a sweatshirt almost every day. I bought this Anine Bing one on sale last year, and I wear it multiple times a week. It was definitely a splurge, but it was worth it because it makes any casual outfit just a little bit cooler (especially with jeans and a blazer in chilly weather).

For Happy Hour

Bodysuit | Jeans | Shoulder bag | Heeled sandals

I never imagined I’d be a fan of SKIMS, but after trying numerous bodysuits, I believe SKIMS stands in a league of its own. I have three different styles, but this one is my favorite. I don’t think I’ve ever put on something more flattering in my life. They provide enough support that I don’t need to wear a bra with them, which is invaluable to me. These relaxed jeans are my favorite of the year. They’re loose, comfortable, and have the perfect fit that I previously struggled to find. When I went to Europe last month, these were the only jeans I packed, which says it all. This Staud bag is a staple in my wardrobe. It’s the perfect size and shape, and I wear it casually and for going out seamlessly. I’m not the best with heels, but these kitten heels are the perfect slightly elevated sandals for summer. They were one of my most-worn pairs of shoes in 2022, and I can walk in them for hours. I love that they can be dressed up or down depending on my mood for the day.

For Running Errands

White tank | Shoulder bag | Denim shorts | Birkenstocks

I’m a Birkenstock enthusiast at heart. I’ve had pairs since I was a child, and these are my favorite pairs yet (I own them in two colors). They didn’t require breaking in like classic Birks, and the gold buckles make them feel a bit more sophisticated. I keep them by my door all summer, and I wear them for errands, walking my dog, or attending a workout class—meaning I wear them every day. On a casual summer day, you’ll find me in a white tank, denim shorts, and these Birkenstocks without a doubt.
